Greek Lesbian Teachers: School, Nation, Family

This database is compiled as part of my research project on lesbian teachers in Greece, culminating in my PhD dissertation under the title “Greek Lesbian Teachers: School, Nation, Family”. The research project explores how Greek lesbian teachers construct their subjectivities and negotiate their sexuality in relation to the social contexts in which they are situated. In looking for answer to the main research question, I employed the qualitative method of semi-structured interviews. Since there was no previous research on Greek lesbian teachers, this semi-structured design allowed me to focus on particular issues surrounding the women and their teaching roles, whilst simultaneously allowing space for free interaction and spontaneity. During the interviews I had a basic interview guide with ten fundamental written questions. Interview data was collected from semi-structured interviews with seventeen women who self-identify as lesbians. All of the participants are white, and were born in Greece. At the time of the interviews, one of them lived in Thessaloniki, one of them lived on Crete, and the rest lived in Athens. Four of the participants work at kindergartens, eight at primary schools, two at secondary schools, and three at high schools. Thus, in this study, all levels of teaching up to high school level are represented. The ages of the participants range from 29 to 58 years old. With the exception of one teacher who works at a private school, the remainder work within the state education system. The teachers are predominantly highly experienced classroom teachers, their teaching experience ranging from 6 to 30 years. With the exception of three women who are substitute teachers, all are in tenured, full-time teaching positions. All interviews were transcribed verbatim. During the analysis, I experimented with different coding categories and emerging themes. Several key ideas and recurring themes were identified under each of the ten questions I had prepared. These themes were used to construct the framework of the three chapters presented in my dissertation.
